Some say that oil and water don't mix, and that was proven in 1963
with the collapse of the Baldwin Hills Dam. Water plays an imporant
role in the history of Los Angeles, and of the Baldwin Hills. Built
in 1951, the Baldwin Hills Dam held water for the residents on the
west side of Los Angeles. On December 14th, 1963, the dam collapsed
killing five and destroying 65 homes. The dam was not rebuilt and its
site was filled in to make way for the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation
